How long does it take to install a Heartland Pergola?

Our two-man crew can install a 16’x16’ freestanding pergola in about four (4) hours—but of course, we put them together all year long. If you’re using an experienced handyman or contractor, two people can build a pergola in a day or less. If you’re an enthusiastic DIYer, plan on up to two days. If your kit is larger, will be attached to your deck or house, or is in a space where you’ll need to dig footings, add in some additional time. Contact an estimator to discuss the specifics of your site.

Do I need a building permit to install a pergola?

In most cases, probably not—but this depends on several factors. While every locality has its own regulations, many exempt residential structures that are 150 square feet or smaller. But if the pergola is part of a commercial structure, full engineering calculations and a permit are usually required.

We recommend you discuss permit requirements with your contractor or local building inspector’s office before you make your purchase.

Do you have drawings with an engineer’s stamp?

All of our standard pergola kits include CAD drawings detailing dimensions and construction. If your building code official requires an engineering stamp, we’ll be happy to refer you to a structural engineer who is familiar with our kits. Additional costs may apply.

How heavy are the pergola components?

Most individual pergola components (rafters, purloins, columns) weigh between 10 and 40 pounds. Pergola beams generally weigh between 50 and 85 pounds, depending on length.
